What Students Have to Say...

I Would Like To Thank You Guys For The QM Training!
I found everyone very friendly and professional. Admin had all the content ready to go, refreshments at the ready. The content was very relevant, useful and the trainers delivered it from experience, not just from a textbook. I found the skills and techniques were very practical and offered real solutions to real issues that we face in these times on a mine or quarry site. It was nice to complete training in an area in which I hadn’t already covered. I would highly recommend MINRES to anyone seeking QM or any other training.”

Target Audience

This qualification reflects the role of individuals such as supervisors and team leaders working open cut mines or quarries. They perform tasks involving a broad range of varied activities, most of which are complex and non-routine. They are responsible for the quantity and quality of the output of others, contribute to the development of technical solutions to non-routine problems and apply safety management plans to the workplace.

Duration & Delivery

The accredited Certificate IV is typically completed over a 6 to 12 month period, depending on the participant’s experience, worksite access, and mode of delivery. Delivery may include one or more of the following:

  • Face-to-face workshops led by experienced facilitators
  • Workplace-based assessments and evidence collection
  • Self-paced study supported by our learning management system
  • Trainer support on-demand, with structured checkpoints across the program

This flexible structure allows participants to apply learning on the job while progressing toward a nationally recognised qualification.

Packaging Rules

The following provides the packaging rules for this qualification, followed by the list of relevant units of competency.

Total number of units = 13. Consisting of 4 core units plus 9 elective units, of which:

  • 1 must be from Group A
  • at least 2 must be from Group B
  • no more than 4 may be from Group C
  • no more than 1 may be from Group D
  • no more than 2 may be from elsewhere in this or any other currently endorsed training package, or from an accredited course.

Elective units must be relevant to the work environment and the qualification, maintain the overall integrity of the AQF alignment, not duplicate the outcome of another unit chosen for the qualification, and contribute to a valid industry-supported vocational outcome.

The elective bank contains both licensed and non-licensed units of competency relating to high risk work in the resources and infrastructure industry. To be appointed under any statutory requirements in related roles, units of competency should be selected to meet the state/territory licensing requirements.

There are no prerequisites to imported units listed in this qualification. Where a unit is imported as an elective care must be taken to ensure that all prerequisites specified are complied with.

Target Audience

This program supports the development of frontline supervisors and team leaders working in open cut mining and quarrying operations. Participants engage in structured, assessment-based training designed to reflect the real demands of supervisory roles in high-risk work environments.

Supervisors in this program work across a broad range of non-routine activities. They are responsible for the safety, coordination, and performance of others, contribute to the resolution of site-based issues, and apply key principles of planning, risk management, and communication in day-to-day operations.

Duration & Delivery

The Resources Supervision program is delivered as a series of six structured workshops, typically spaced over a 6-month period. Each session is face-to-face and designed for immediate workplace application. Delivery includes:

  • Interactive workshops (1 full day per session)
  • Formal assessment tasks and workplace-based activities
  • CPD-recognised hours for each completed session
  • Optional capstone project (SW6) for advanced application of learning

This format supports busy supervisors by combining short, high-impact learning blocks with real-world reflection and feedback.

Packaging Rules

The Resources Supervision program is a structured, formally assessed leadership development pathway for frontline supervisors. While this program does not result in a nationally recognised qualification, it is aligned to AQF Level 4 outcomes and mapped against key units from the RII40120 Certificate IV in Surface Extraction Operations.

Participants complete a series of six workshops, each focusing on critical capabilities for effective supervision in mining and quarrying environments:

  • SW1 – Risk, Safety & Site Awareness
  • SW2 – Communication, Conflict & Toolbox Talks
  • SW3 – Planning, Delegation & Daily Task Management
  • SW4 – Hazard Identification, Incident Response & Reporting
  • SW5 – Team Leadership, Role Clarity & Compliance Expectations
  • SW6 – Extended Workplace Project & Portfolio (Optional Capstone Assessment)

Recognition of Prior Learning

Participants with existing experience in mining, quarrying, or supervisory roles may be eligible to have their skills formally recognised through a structured Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process.

The RPL pathway enables you to demonstrate competence through:

  • Workplace documents and site-based evidence
  • Verified industry experience
  • Completed assessments and third-party reports
  • Oral questioning and scenario-based interviews

All RPL applications are reviewed by qualified assessors against the national competency standards of the RII40120 Certificate IV in Surface Extraction Operations. Where appropriate, gap training and support will be provided to ensure participants meet the full requirements of each unit.

If you’re currently employed in a relevant role or hold substantial experience in supervising mobile plant, conducting risk assessments, or managing site operations, you may be eligible for full or partial RPL.

To discuss your eligibility, contact MINRES for a confidential RPL pre-assessment.
